So, the BBC Broadcast Bootcamp is under way; we are already on the second day of the five-day workshop over the half-term holidays. The workshop which is taking place at the NTI Birmingham (BCU), sees 40 young, talented and gifted year 9 and 10 students from across the city; develop and expand their skills and knowledge in radio journalism and radio production.
On Monday, the kids were introduced to radio journalism, interviewing techniques and an introduction to the latest technology, portable recorders. Today we’ll see, the young students carry out Vox Pops in the centre of Birmingham.
Each group has a specific topic that they will be going out and asking the general public in Birmingham about. There are some very fascinating topics with discussions about; “the media portrayal of teenagers”, “the social impact of social networking in teenagers”, “individuality” and “the increasing demand of new technology”.
Many of these topics focus on the developments of new technology and the digital media. It seems as though technology is a key issue with young people and possibly some of the constant pressures to ‘be cool’ by having the latest trendy mobile phone, laptop or even having the ‘most’ friends on Facebook!
Either way, this week is going to provide some useful information for everyone to take note from.
Find out what happens later on today, by staying tuned!

Birmingham City University’s Creative Networks last Thursday saw a great turnout of people who currently work in the creative and digital media industries and of students and graduates who aspire to do the same. The speakers on ‘augmented reality, games development and the digital agency’ more than lived up to their billing and a fabulous night was had by all.
Thursday evening saw BSEEN and Creative Networks come together for another evening at Fazeley Studios.
The evening focused around mobile phone apps and the technological world it’s opened up investigating how the future is going to change with these new advances.
Dave Taylor, senior lecturer at BCU looked into the next generation of web interaction tools which promise an enhanced reality. Looking at possibilities of overlays visible on spectacles or sun visors, used by airline pilots and could potentially render mobiles and phones along with their apps outmoded. Voice recognition was another interesting aspect investigated with the creation of language translation capability it can make access to world wide information so much easier.
Speakers included;
Mardc Rene Gardeya who is the founder and CEO of Hoppala creating content and tools for Mobile Augmented Reality. www.hoppala-agency.com, Paul Ranson MD of Slam Productions, one of the 100 game development companies in the world who have developed a major industry tool which enables games to be made in weeks rather than years. www.slam-productions.co.uk. Martin Johnston, Director of Clusta Labs. Part of the communications agency Clusta in Birmingham talked about how he delivers innovative work by blending strategic thinking with the latest software. www.clusta.com. Finishing off the panel is Jason Hall, Head of innovation at Screen West Midlands. http://www.screenwm.co.uk .
The panel looked at how the app phenomenon has boosted sales of products such as iphones, ipads and android phones but how they may have peaked in terms of what comes next. It was pointed out that we are entering an era where smart machines can react to humans in useful ways. Meaning we’re entering an exciting technological era producing intriguing possibilities.
We’re grateful to everyone who took part and for the help we received from the partnership with BSEEN and NTI. We look forward to future collaborations and particular praise must go to Fazeley Events at Fazeley Studios who hosted the event so memorably in their superb venue.

Rosy talked about how graduates should respond to job applications, with some examples taken from the Grad Central website. She also looked at the best ways to ‘sell yourself’ to employers and how to understand the role you are applying for beforehand. See Rosy’s presentation for more details: A good application- Rosy Jones Presentation 25th Jan 2011
Also a short video of some of the things Rosy spoke about on the day. Go onto our Facebook page a visit the Videos section: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=176957702346482&comments#!/profile.php?id=100000967615122
We also had a guest appearance from Michelle Sommerville from Marshmallow Creative, who discussed her process of hiring a graduate who’d graduated from Birmingham City University within her business; all with the help of Graduate Central. It was very interesting for the graduates to hear from a small business owner, about how she feels graduates really need to ‘stand out and bseen!
After the first part in the morning, Sarah Westwood from DrumVoice took centre stage with her encouraging and vibrant drumming workshop which got everyone all fired up! It was great to see all the graduate attendees having fun with each other and working as a team to create rhythmic sounds. After the session, everyone was networking and talking with each, so I’m sure some people made some new friends.

On January 25th (2011), the BSEEN & Grad Central Event titled; ‘What employers are looking for in graduate candidates?’ is being held at the NTI (New Technology Institute) Birmingham intending to encourage graduates within the region to develop their knowledge and skills of understanding what employers want from graduate employees and how to really ‘sell’ themselves to those organisations.
The event organised by BSEEN (Birmingham Skills for Enterprise and Employability Network), has been collaboration between Birmingham City University and graduate recruitment specialist- Grad Central. The BSEEN programme is funded by Be Birmingham via the Working Neighbourhoods Fund, which is managed by Birmingham City Council and delivered in partnership with Aston University, Birmingham City University and University of Birmingham.
One of the guest speakers on the day will be Sarah Westwood- Founder & Director of Drumvoice which is a training and events organisation in Birmingham; Drumvoice, brings together African drumming, singing & dance workshops to schools and organisations across the West Midlands and the UK. Over the last decade, Drumvoice has received endorsements and commendations from a wide range of educational and arts bodies and has provided team-building events for such companies as Microsoft, Virgin & Rolls Royce as well as many local organisations. Sarah will be conducting a short workshop session inspiring the graduates to think and feel positive.
Rosy Jones, Director of FP Enterprises will be facilitating the session, providing advice and top tips for how graduates should present their CV’s and portfolios to potential employees. Rosy’s extensive knowledge and experience within industry will be valuable for graduates who may be struggling to find work. Along side Rosy, Michelle Sommerville- Marshmallow Creative, CEO will be at the event to discuss her experiences of hiring a recent graduate to her organisation.
Hopefully, this event should give graduates across the region an opportunity to hear first hand information from professionals and people who have started their own businesses.
